With the hype that meditation has been having, it is no wonder that a lot of people want to hop on the meditation bandwagon.

It is but natural then that new practitioners look for ways to meditate effectively and reach the highest form of self-realization.

Below are 5 tips to meditate effectively.

  • Choose the time where you have the least distractions. This would depend on your schedule and comfort. Do you usually have guests at night? I suggest that you schedule your meditation when you are alone. Some people I know have their sessions at dawn, when everybody else is asleep. That way, there are absolutely no phone calls, no friends coming over, and other reasons that may have prevented you from having your peace.

Please note: this is at your bidding. Find that time of day that you are comfortable and if possible, clear that hour of other appointments and tasks.

  • Find a place where there is fresh air. Same as the first tip, this is entirely to your bidding. It maybe your room or you may take that little trip to the seashore, or somewhere where there are trees. Meditation practitioners often go to places where they feel closest to nature. Others often do the procedure in the comforts of their room, with incense, music or anything that would create the mood for better meditation.

  • Begin to focus. Focus your mind on something that does not trigger a strong response from you. Do not think of sad thoughts. Put your mind in a relaxed state. Eventually, this would prevent your stress response and would be able to let you give full attention to the task at hand.

  • Concentrate. Concentrate on a subject that appeals to you. It could be a flower, the flame of the candle, the smell of incense.
  • Observe on how your mind works. Let your thoughts wonder and do not try to stop them. If possible, detach yourself from your self, if you know what I mean. Look at how your mind wanders like somebody who is an audience.

Within a few weeks, you would be able to observe a marked difference in the way you think or in the way of how you perceive things. It is important to remember this: DO NOT RUSH. Do not expect to get results after you have tried meditating once or twice. I tell you, meditation involves a process. The end result is self- awareness and realization and that in itself is a goal that is not easily met. Test the waters and see the results.
